The first FIP Heavyweight Champion was crowned on September 25, 2004, when Homicide defeated CM Punk in the finals of a two night tournament in Tampa, Florida at the first two FIP show, Emergence. Homicide has the longest reign with the title, holding it for 476 days before losing it to Bryan Danielson at Ring of Honor's Hell Freezes Over on January 14, 2006.

During Ring of Honor's, Fifth Year Festival, they ran two shows in Liverpool, England. At the first show on March 3, 2007, Roderick Strong turn the title into the FIP World Heavyweight Championship after successfully defending it against PAC.
