[edit] Career
[edit] Early career
CM Punk was trained at the Steel Domain, a wrestling school run by Ace Steel and Danny Dominion. There, he met Colt Cabana, who would become one of his closets friends in the wrestling industry. The two would travel together, competing in promotions such as St. Paul Championship Wrestling and IWA Mid-South, often teaming with or feuding against each other. They would later form the Gold Bond Mafia with Dave Prazak, Chucky Smooth and Adam Pearce.
In IWA Mid-South, Punk had a lengthy feud with Chris Hero, with the two wrestling several one hour draws. Their longest match would be a Two out of Three Falls match, which lasted just over 90 minutes.
A few months prior to his Ring of Honor debut, Punk suffered the worst injury in his career when he fractured his skull in a match against Reckless Youth.

[edit] 2002
On September 21, 2002, Ring of Honor held a show in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The show was to feature a one night tournament to crown the first ROH Tag Team Champions, but several wrestlers missed the event, causing the plan for the intended show to be “thrown out the window”, and instead became Unscripted. CM Punk and Colt Cabana, both of whom were scheduled to wrestle in ROH later year, were wrestling at another show across town, and afterwards went to the ROH show to see what it was like. ROH officials asked the two to go out and cut a promo. Punk went out and hyped his upcoming debut, while Cabana, who came out a little later, interrupted him demanding to know “why he wasn’t booked to wrestle in ROH”, yet Punk was. Punk then challenged him to a match on December 7.
Punk would make his in-ring debut two months later at All-Star Extravaganza. He competed in a gauntlet match for the Number One Contender’s Trophy, but was eliminated in the first match when Michael Shane pinned him while holding on to the ropes. The following month, Punk had his first match against Colt Cabana in ROH, with Cabana winning following a Colt 45. After the match, Gary Michael Capetta announced that the two would meet in a rematch later that month, with the winner receiving an ROH contract and thus will be flown to all future shows. Punk said that if he won, he would sell the ticket so that they could drive to the shows and both wrestle for ROH; however, Cabana said that he hated driving, so when he won he was going to take the ticket. At Final Battle 2002, Punk defeated Cabana to win the contract.
[edit] 2003
At Revenge of the Prophecy, ROH’s first show of 2003, CM Punk defeated Michael Shane in a rematch from All-Star Extravaganza. The following month at the One Year Anniversary Show, CW Anderson issued an open challenge to any wrestler. Punk accepted and defeated Anderson in his third straight singles match. After the show, Punk cut a promo directed at Raven, who was scheduled to debut for ROH in March. Punk, who is straightedge and doesn’t believe in drinking or doing drugs, said they he respects every wrestler in ROH locker, yet he doesn’t respect Raven, who had a well documented history with drugs and alcohol. Punk then issued a challenge to Raven to be his first opponent in ROH, so that he could prove Raven doesn’t belong in Ring of Honor, and to prove that straightedge means he’s “better than you”.
At Expect the Unexpected, Punk had his first match against Raven. The two got into a verbal confrontation earlier in the show, with Raven’s saying he wanted the match under “Raven’s Rules”. Punk, who felt he was the superior athlete, agreed, under the condition that the first ten minutes under normal rules, with the belief being it wouldn’t take him longer than ten minutes to defeat Raven. Punk wouldn’t defeat him in less than ten minutes, but would win the match when he made Raven tap out to his new submission hold, the Devil Lock. The feud between Punk and Raven would escalate at the following show, when they met in a tag team match. Punk chose his trainer Ace Steel to be his partner, while Raven chose Punk’s best friend and rival Colt Cabana. Raven would win the match after pinning Steel, and challenged Punk to get in the ring and take his beating “like a man”. When Punk refused, Raven began to pick up Steel and repeatedly give him a Raven Effect DDT. Punk would sneak back in when Raven wasn’t looking, and attacked him. Punk then began to yell at Cabana for standing by and watching when Raven was attacking Steel. Cabana then turned on Raven, and began attacking him with Punk. Punk, Cabana and Steel would then form the Second City Saints.
At The Epic Encounter on April 12, Punk wrestled a singles match against BJ Whitmer. The match ended in a no contest when Punk gave Whitmer a German Suplex off the ring apron through a table, knocking both of the out, with Whitmer receiving the worst of the impact. Backstage later in the show, Punk checked on Whitmer, saying the next time they faced he’d go easier on him so that he wouldn’t “quit like that again”. Two weeks later, Punk had his first singles match ever against Homicide, wrestling him for the Number One Contender’s Trophy. Punk’s stock in ROH would begin to rise the following month at Do or Die. Punk and Cabana would win a Tag Team Scramble match over the Jay and Mark Briscoe, The Carnage Crew (HC Loc and Tony DeVito) and Special K (Izzy and Dixie). Later, Punk competed in a Four Corner Survival match against Christopher Daniels, Jimmy Rave and Frankie Kazarian. After the match, Daniels offered Punk and the Second City Saints a change to join his faction, The Prophecy. Punk agreed to join, on the condition that Daniels shook his hand. Daniels, who did not believe in the Code of Honor and refused to obey it by shaking hands, walked away. On top of wrestling two matches at Do or Die, Punk also did commentary throughout the show, his first time doing so in ROH.
At Night of the Grudges on June 14, Punk teamed with Cabana to defeat Raven and BJ Whitmer in a grudge match. After the show, Raven asked Christopher Daniels to be his partner at the following show. Punk and Cabana would again defeat Raven, followed by Punk trying to strangle Raven with a steel dog chain. The following month, the two would wrestle in ROH’s first Dog Collar match at the inaugural Death before Dishonor. After once again defeating Raven, Punk used duct tape to tie him to the ropes. Punk the cut a promo saying he was going to send Raven “off the wagon” and back to rehab, and preceded to pour beer down his throat. Tommy Dreamer, Raven’s long-time archenemies in Extreme Championship Wrestling, ran through the crowd and into the ring, attacking Punk. He freed Raven, followed by the two of them tying Punk to the ropes. Raven then got revenge on Punk by pouring beer down his throat.
Punk would miss the next show, Wrath of the Racket, due to him being on his first tour in Japan. Following the show, Punk’s girlfriend Lucy, who made her debut at Retribution: Round Robin Challenge II, was attacked by an unknown assailant. Upon his return, Punk began to investigate the attack, suspecting Raven due to a note with a reference to on of his tattoos being left next to Lucy.
At Bitter Friends, Stiffer Enemies, CM Punk had his first singles match against Samoa Joe in ROH. The following month at Beating the Odds on September 6, Punk wrestled in ROH’s first steel cage match, a Clockwork Orange House of Fun match against Raven. Raven would defeat Punk, but Punk would gain a measure of revenge by “crucifying” Raven to a large red X, a symbol of the straightedge lifestyle. Later that month at Glory by Honor II, Ring of Honor let Punk and Raven choose each others opponents for the evening. Punk chose his friend Steve Corino, while Raven chose Terry Funk. Punk would win his match by referee stoppage when Terry refused to give up win Punk had him in a Figure Four leg lock. After the match, Punk refused to let go. Colt Cabana came out, seemingly to try to convince Punk to break the hold, but instead joined in the attack on Funk.
